When I think of baby showers, I immediately consider it an American tradition rather that something we do here in the UK. However, it has become increasingly obvious to the Frame My Name team, that baby showers are becoming more and more popular in Britain, with customers asking us week on week if we have a range of personalised invitations suitable for baby showers. So, listening to our customers wishes, we have created a beautiful baby shower range and in the spirit of things, I have decided to do a little research for myself, to see what this baby shower craze is all about.
Apparently, the tradition was that a group of women (relatives and friends) would meet with a first time mother to celebrate the imminent arrival of her first born child, and to share advice, tips and stories as she approached motherhood. Today however, women not only share advice and stories. They may also play games such as guessing the baby’s date of birth, weight, sex, etc.
Again, reflecting on my own preconceptions, I always imagined baby showers to take place at the mother’s home, in a relaxed atmosphere. However, I’ve come to realise that baby showers are becoming bigger and bolder than ever, with many being held at hired venues e.g. restaurants and hotels. Some even hold their shower at a spa for a day of pampering. This shows us that the baby shower is now celebrated as an occasion.
Generally, it is not the mother who arranges the baby shower, instead a close friend organises the event in honor of the mum-to-be. This is because historically it was seen as greedy and rude for the family to ask for gifts and a party. The guests attending the shower are expected to bring gifts for the mother and/or baby and these would normally be opened at the shower as part of the course of the party. In return, food is normally provided as well as favours, which are given to all the guests who attended. Furthermore, the shower is occasionally decorated around a theme sometimes personal to the mother, or more general themes are used like ”It’s a Boy!” with a blue colour scheme, for example.
All in all, the sentiment of the baby shower is what is most appealing – where a mum-to-be is surrounded by her closest female friends and family supporting her and celebrating the coming of a new baby.
So, if you are considering organising a baby shower, take a look at our personalised invitations. As well as providing your guests with the time and date, the invitations give your guests their first glimpse at what your shower is going to involve and provides them with key information, e.g. venue, dress code, theme, and gift list (if you have one).
